Saint Nicholas’ Parish News
July & August 2011
Carrickfergus, N Ireland
RECTOR’S LETTER
Dear Parishioners & Friends,
It’s that time of year again! Students & school pupils begin to relax as the last of the exams are completed; barbecues are dusted off as we look anxiously for an improvement in the weather; perhaps the roofspace is opened and the holiday suitcases are lifted out again. In the life of the parish, most of our organisations have closed for the summer and hard-working leaders are looking forward to a well-earned break!
Yes, the summer season is upon us again and, wet or dry, we all look forward to a rest from the normal routine of life. For some people this year, anxieties about finance and security of employment mean that they might not be planning their usual summer holiday, but even a few days spent relaxing with family and friends can have a great revitalising effect.
Rest and refreshment is necessary for all of us - God set the pattern in creation when he built the principle of the Sabbath day’s rest in to the working week. Jesus too, demonstrated the importance of taking time out in the midst of a busy life. Whether you are holidaying at home or away this year, can I encourage you to make the most of time away from the normal routine to relax and invest in those important relationships with the Lord and with family.
For the younger members of the parish and their friends we are once again holding a Holiday Bible Club in August. From Monday 15th - Friday 19th August at 6.30pm the Church Halls will be transformed into “Rocky’s Plaice” as we enjoy plenty of fun and activities while we learn more about the difference that Jesus can make in our lives. Further details are available elsewhere in the magazine. Do encourage any young people of primary school age to come and join in the fun!
A number of people have talked about former days when St Nicholas’ was left unlocked during the day and they could slip in and be quiet, to take time and pray. Sadly, we are unable to do this any more, but over the summer months we hope to open the church on Friday mornings for prayer and reflection. Perhaps you might like to slip in and take time quietly with God? There will be resources provided each Friday to help you pray, with a particular focus on praying for mission and the work of God’s church and kingdom in the world. Why not come along and enjoy the opportunity of time spent quietly with God in his house?
Do remember in your prayers several of our young people who will be undertaking new things for God this summer. Hester Gingles is going on a mission trip to Brazil with New Tribes Mission and Sarah Nelson is travelling to Uganda with Fields of Life. A number of others will attend camps and be engaged in Christian service at various venues in Northern Ireland. They will value your prayer support greatly.
Whatever this summer brings for you and your family, may you know God’s blessing on your lives and know that there is always a warm welcome for you down at St Nicholas’!
With love in Jesus,
George

Recent Update from the Heaneys
Dear Friends,Sam is back to himself! Thank you for all your kindness and/or prayers.
The final Masters exams and the deadline for new admissions have ended. There seems to be a good number who have applied for the courses including about 6 who have applied for the MA in Theology and Contemporary Issues. Our prayer is that theologians who apply would somehow be able to find sponsorship (at present we are developing a scheme called 'The Neema Scholarships' ['Neema' meaning 'grace'] and are hoping that schools, seminaries/theological colleges, churches and individuals would support it).
On June 15 there was a Special Senate for undergraduate Admissions. Robert proposed two new posts in his Directorate - Associate Director for Academic Publishing (ADAP) and Associate Director for Postgraduate Studies (ADPoGS).
He has someone in mind for the ADAP post. Please pray that he would be able to have a conversation with the Vice-Chancellor this morning and that he would be able to table and get these two new posts passed through Senate.
Thank you for your ongoing fellowship, friendship and interest,
Robert, Sharon and Sam.
Back to Church Sunday
Imagine an opportunity in which together we join with Christians around the world in a global day of mission. We have that opportunity on the 25th September 2011 through:
Back to Church Sunday says that ‘Success is one person inviting one person’.
Back to Church Sunday is based on the simplest and shortest step in evangelism - that we should invite someone we already know to something we love; invite our friend to our church.
In 2010 Back to Church Sunday mobilised around 6,000 churches across the world (4,650 in the UK) to invite their friends to church. As a result over 80,000 extra people attended church on Back to Church Sunday in the UK alone, with a long-term result of around 10,000 people added to the church in one day.
Let's all play our part and pray as we approach Back To Church Sunday!
Calling all primary school boys and girls!
‘Rocky’s Plaice’ is a special Holiday Bible Club just for you this summer.
Take your table at Rocky's Plaice to find out more about Peter
and how knowing Jesus changed his life, and then how he and his friends started to change the world!

SUNDAY SCHOOL NOTES
Our Sunday School year ended on 26th June with our Prize Giving taking place at the 11 am Family Service. This followed a distinctly dry and wet excursion on 21st May. The children (and adults) enjoyed the many activities in the dry of W5 at the Odyssey. Then followed a very wet afternoon spent in Bangor. Full marks to the intrepid children who braved the conditions and had a wonderful time on the swans in the boating pond. So much for bringing the excursion forward to make the most of May’s good weather! At our Prize Giving we bade farewell to two of our morning teachers who are ‘retiring’ to get married. Lauren Mulvenney has taught children in the P3 class for 10 years, following a year or two as a teenage helper. Laura Johnston has taught the P2 class for 4 years, and has had the additional responsibility of looking after our singing. Both have made a significant contribution to the life of our Sunday School and the children who have passed through their classes will have much to be grateful for. Thank you Lauren and Laura for your dedication, commitment and enthusiasm. It has been a privilege and a delight having you both as part of our team. I and the other teachers wish you both God’s richest blessings for the future.
Our Smartie Tube appeal has continued through the year, raising much needed funds for the Children's Outreach Mission in Tabora, Tanzania. The amount raised this year is £950 and, as always, I want to say a very sincere thank you on behalf of Emmanuel in Tabora. Those who have supported this appeal have done so consistently and without fanfare throughout the year. To those children who have given willingly and with a smile, thank you to you all.
Emmanuel’s most recent newsletter tells of a very worrying situation that has developed over the winter months in that area of Tanzania. The wet season rains have largely failed and there are now water and food shortages. As a consequence food prices rocket and people have to travel (walk) further in search of water. Those with a water tap only get water twice a week. Believe it or not but this has an effect on the children’s ministry. How? Women and children are spending longer each day travelling further looking for water. This happens at night as well as during the day and therefore the children are not available for classes and children’s clubs.
This is now the dry season and there is no prospect of rain until November or December. Please pray for this situation, that there will be enough food and water to go around, even sparingly, and that the poorest will not be overlooked.
We also give thanks for the return to good health of Elizabeth, Emmanuel’s wife, following the birth of their baby girl at the turn of the year. Elizabeth had been ill for up to 3 months but following much prayer and a correct diagnosis she is now fully recovered.
Please continue to pray for this ministry. One of the clubs anticipates 250 children for 5 days in July. The challenge is immense, we must play our part. Thank you.
The new Sunday School year begins 4th September at 11 am and 2.30 pm respectively. Have a wonderful summer.
