Saint Nicholas’ Parish News
Julu and August 2010
Carrickfergus, N Ireland
RECTOR’S LETTER
Dear Friends at St Nicholas’,They say that time seems to pass more quickly as you get older - if that’s true, I must be getting old! It seems hard to believe that by the time you are reading this I will have been rector here for a full year. From my point of view it has been a great year. I count it a tremendous privilege to have been called to serve here in Carrickfergus and I want to thank all of you for the warmth of the welcome that you have extended to me and to my family as we have settled into St Nicholas’.
It has been a busy year and there have been many things to discover and learn about the parish. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to my colleagues - Darren McCartney, Kathleen Brown & Andrew Campbell all worked hard to make the process of the new rector’s settling in a relatively easy process. Darren, of course, has left us and is quickly becoming a great rector for the people of Knocknamuckley; but we have been blessed in having Brian Courtney & Peter Ferguson come to join the staff team.
Alongside the clergy team there are a host of others who work tirelessly throughout the year to make sure that the work of the kingdom continues to happen week by week and month by month. We are blessed to have each and every one as part of the team here.
As we come to the summer I hope that all the leaders of our organisations will enjoy a well-earned break from their responsibilities. At the end of a busy season I want express specific thanks some people who have decided to step down from the roles that they have carried out in the life of the parish.
Sharon Lutton has been a teacher with the Afternoon Sunday School for some 30 years and has been Superintendent for the last number of those. It’s a role that she has fulfilled with quiet efficiency and dedication and we appreciate so much all that she has done for so many children over the years. I’m delighted that Sharon is going to continue to share in the work of teaching, but she feels that she would like to step down from the role of Superintendent. We thank her for this faithful service.
Alan & Karen Miles have decided that the time is right for them to resign from their roles as officers of the BB company. They have given tremendous service to our boys. Alan has been an officer with 4th Carrick for about 12 years and latterly has been our officer-in-charge; Karen has been an officer for 6 years and for the last 2 years has been running both the Anchor boys and the Junior Sections. Anyone who knows anything about running a youth organisation will appreciate just what a commitment that is! It’s not only the giving up of their Wednesday evenings, but also the time involved beforehand in preparing for each night’s program and in the extra activities that the boys participate in! They have had a particularly successful year this year, with many successes, and so are stepping down on a high! We thank them for all that they have given to BB through this dedicated service.
Please pray that we will be able to identify people who will be willing to take on these important roles.
I hope that you and those dear to you will enjoy a chance to have a break over the summer period. The creation story in Genesis 1 reminds us that God built times of rest and refreshment into the creation - He himself rested on the seventh day. It is important that we take time for rest and refreshment in the midst of busy lives; it’s part of being obedient to live in accordance with God’s pattern for our lives. So make sure that you take time this summer - time away from work, time to be with family, time to recharge your batteries, time to reflect on God’s love and his plan for your life.
May God bless you richly,
Your friend & rector,
George

News from the Heaneys
Dear Partners and FriendsSam has had quite a rough ride this week. He was very ill on Monday night with a high fever. On Tuesday morning it appeared that he was much better. His temperature stayed quite high and we took him to one of the local clinics. It is rumoured there are no fully qualified doctors in Dodoma at the moment but on Tuesday there was a visiting surgeon at the clinic. He took blood and urine samples from Sam and established quickly that he had malaria. As is common, the next few nights were difficult for Sam but during the day he was quite good. Saturday we saw a marked improvement and on Monday when we went back to the clinic for a second test it showed Sam is clear of Malaria parasites and he is now back at school.
We have been very humbled and encouraged by the many emails and text messages we have received this week. Thank you for your good wishes and/or prayers.
Robert has finished most of the material for his three classes. He is now beginning review classes helping the students prepare for the exams. Sharon has been doing the marking for the three courses. The students Sharon and Robert are supervising are making slow progress with their research. This is beginning to get a little worrying as the deadline for submission is July 17!
Kindest regards from Robert, Sharon and Sam. www.heaneys.vox.com

Our last meeting of the season was an outing to Newtownards on Wednesday 16th June. We left the Church at 10.00 am and on the way stopped at the Somme Heritage Centre at Whitespots Country Park where a guided Tour proved to be very interesting. On arriving at Newtownards we had a few hours to look around the town and do some shopping. It was a beautiful sunny day and before returning home we met up with member of St Mark’s Mothers Union who provided us with a lovely meal. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 15th September at 7.15 pm in the Church Hall, where any new members will be made very welcome.

LAUGHLINES
Untimely answered prayerDuring the minister's prayer one Sunday, there was a loud whistle from one of the back pews. Tommy's mother was horrified. She pinched him into silence and, after church, asked, "Tommy, whatever made you do such a thing?"Tommy answered soberly, "I’ve been asking God to teach me to whistle, and suddenly, he did!"
Prayer equality
When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past). For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayer, Kelli would say, "And all girls." This soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this closing. My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, "Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?" She replied, "Because everybody always finish their prayers by saying 'All Men."

SUNDAY SCHOOL NOTES
Our Sunday School year concluded on Sunday 27th June with our Prize Giving taking place at the 11.30 am service in Church. The congregation was updated regarding the ongoing Smartie appeal in aid of Children's Ministry in Tabora Diocese. Once again the response has been significant with £1000 being raised. As in each of the previous 5 years I want to say a most sincere ‘thank you’ to everyone, parishioners and parents alike, who have contributed to this cause. Your regular and consistent support has ensured that over the past 6 years, approximately £1000 has been raised and forwarded to Tabora each year to be used in some aspect of Children's ministry.
Many parishioners will hopefully remember Emmanuel, and his several visits to Church and Sunday School here. He has been back in Tabora Diocese for about a year, and he is in charge of Children's Ministry there. He has begun a number of Good News Clubs for children and these meet in the homes of people who have agreed to assist him. Emmanuel and his wife Elizabeth also run several Bible study groups for older boys and girls of secondary school age.
The effectiveness of these clubs and groups is borne out by the comments and testimonies of parents and children who attend.
He specifically asks for prayer for all the boys and girls and their salvation, and also for more helpers and hostesses to open their homes for more clubs. He includes prayer requests for finance for materials and resources for these clubs, together with running costs for his motorbike, which St Nicholas’ parishioners supported the purchase of through a fund raising barn dance.
This is where our Sunday School fund raising comes in, as your financial support by way of the Smartie appeal will be sent to Emmanuel very shortly.
I have arranged through the Bible Society to make 50 Childrens Bibles in Swahili available for Emmanuel, to be paid for from your contributions.
Incidentally his most recent email at the end of June, tells us of an accident he had on his motorbike, when he was hit by another motor bike and thrown off. While his injuries are not major, no broken bones, his is clearly battered, bruised and in shock. I am waiting for further information regarding repairs to the motorbike which I hope we can help him out with.
It is such a privilege to be involved with Emmanuel in the Children's ministry in Tabora Diocese, through our financial giving and through prayer. Please do include this work in your prayers, prayer is essential to ensure God’s blessing on this ministry.
Our Sunday Schools, both morning and afternoon, will resume 5th September. Have a wonderful Summer holiday.
